What the city of Fremantle is doing
I live in South Fremantle, so my local community is Fremantle. Fremantle is well known to be a very sustainable community. This is very true, the local Fremantle government is very sustainable and green and it is not just our local government the people in Fremantle are very sustainable as well. The local government is most known for their carbon neutral of set (sustainable energy use). Though what sort of stuff are they doing with deforestation, that is what I am going to write about.
Fremantle works against digging up forests for oil, by having lots of public transports that are often used by people in Fremantle, this helps because that way we don’t have lots of people using their own cars, which uses a LOT of petrol and where do you get petrol from, digging up forests for oil. Fremantle has the CAT bus, it is split into two buses the red CAT and the blue CAT these buses go all around Fremantle and their free so this encourages people to get the free CAT bus rather then spend thousands of dollars on petrol. Fremantle also has lots of bicycle paths and lots of bicycle locking spots, the local Fremantle governments makes it very convenient to ride your bike. At lots of Fremantle festivals they often have stalls and things like that, that talk about encouraging you to ride your bike. Fremantle has lots of active events for using transport that is sustainable; some events are Bike week, Ride to Work Breakfast and Walk Week. In fact now a days it is so much more easier to ride your bike places then go through the traffic to get were you want to go. Fremantle has also proposed a “no helmet” trial, because they think that this will encourage people to cycle if they don’t have to wear helmets. Freewheeling Freo, this is a project that is under-way which is where there are free bikes for hire around Fremantle.
National average of bicycle participation rate – 2.9% of residents
(Fremantle Is Aiming To Be At 5.8% In 2017)
Fremantle’s bicycling participation rate – 1.7% of residents

Fremantle also has a lot of fair trade. This helps because it is giving more business to smaller businesses that don’t tear down the environment (forests) as much as big businesses do. A lot of fair trade places such as Oxfam shop have products that have been recycled to make.
Fremantle has a plan called the Green Plan that was introduced in 2001. It is about enhancing and managing vegetation on parks, reserves and private lands. It is about bringing in new green spaces. Just a few of the projects that are happening under the Green Plan are: Booyeembara park, Samson Park, Prawn Bay Tidal Inlet and Port and Leighton Beach.
Fremantle: has lots of small-scale vegetation plantings, works towards creating habitats and coastal dune maintenance. They also support schools towards planting projects (such as school trips to go planting). These help forests because they are all about planting trees and plants, which makes up for the trees that have been cut down. Fremantle also supports lots of projects that help plant trees and things such as the native verge plantings scheme, small vegetation in existing parks and reserves, nest box installations and costal dune protection.
Fremantle also makes sure the habitats that are in Fremantle are clean. Some actions they have done for this is the plastic reduction local law, undertaking marine debris surveys, programmed summer beach cleaning and the Pro Aqua water vending machines. The parks and reserves support the program 1000 trees. Which is were they plant trees. Also the City of Fremantle plants 5000 native plants and more in coastal reserves and bush lands. The city is also working with Carbon Neutral in the Urban Forest Project. This allow staff to help plant trees on planting days and helps the city support the vegetation areas and develop carbon sinks.
The City of Fremantle has the Living Smart course, which is 7-8 weeks. The course helps people with skills and knowledge to have a sustainable home. The course teaches people about simple living, waste, gardening for biodiversity and transport, these are all things that help stop deforestation. Living Smart makes people very motivated in doing stuff in their own lives. It has also won lots of awards.
Fremantle has lots of sustainable local food. This helps deforestation because many forests are cut down to clear space for animals to be kept in for food. With local sustainable food this method of meat production is not used which saves lots of forests.
Plastic bags can cause deforestation; the oil that is used to make plastic bags is often got from digging up forests. The local council has submitted a City of Fremantle plastic bag local law to the state government. This would mean retailers would not be able to hand out single-use non-biodegradable plastic bags. This saves thousand’s of plastic bags that would have just been used and then thrown into landfills.
The City is investigating Eco-Buy. Eco-buy helps organizations (in this case the city of Fremantle) with products and companies and weather they are sustainable. Also the City is thinking of making the sources of goods provide a certification process to make sure that the product is meeting sustainable criteria. The City of Fremantle has a law that says that in meetings and events the catering has to be local and sustainable. The things they use such as containers, plates and bowls have to be recyclable.
There are lots of public recycling bins everywhere, so that people in Fremantle can easily recycle, recycling helps stop deforestation, because many wood products are recycled, when wood products are recycled there is no need to make new wood products, because they can just use the old wood products. That way there is no need to chop down more trees and forests. So many people in Fremantle having garage sales this also help with recycling, a lot of houses do this and it is another very good way of recycling. Instead of companies making new products to sell to you, you can just by products that someone else does not need any more.
